Quilting Machine Training

April 1st, 5:30 PM

The Claremont MakerSpace’s quilting machine is a great tool for creative, efficient quilting! In this hands-on training session, participants will learn how to set up a project on the quilting machine and utilize its standard features. Participants of this class will have the opportunity to sign up for a follow-up certification session, so that they may use the machine on their own.

Make A Coptic Notebook

April 11th, 6 PM

Create a notebook as adventurous as you. This traveler’s notebook uses the Coptic binding method. This unique binding method is one of the oldest in human history, dating back as early as the second century. It allows the book to lay flat when opened to any page, making it great for sketchbooks. Notebook measures 5.75” x 8.75” when done. Your book boards will have been made on the MakerSpace’s laser cutter. Follow along virtually as you construct the notebook. Sign up deadline is 4/1/21!

Dream it, Make it, Print it (Ages 8 – 13)

April 1 – April 20 at 4:30 PM

Over four sessions, participants learn how to use a CAD program to create their very own designs. Learn about the engineering design process and make your own original pieces in Tinkercad. We’ll then print your designs on our 3D printers. Projects can be mailed to you! Recommended ages 8 and up. Should be comfortable using a computer mouse and keyboard.

The Claremont MakerSpace (CMS) Artist In Residence Program is designed to empower New Hampshire and Vermont based artists with tools, training and space to create compelling new work. Each CMS Artist In Residence receives $800 towards the creation of new work at the CMS, two months of Unlimited CMS Membership, a dedicated studio space at the CMS, and training to use new tools. Each residency runs for two months.

All mediums and levels of experience are welcome to apply. Residencies are open to both NH and VT artists. Artists from New Hampshire may apply to any of the five residency periods. Artists from Vermont may apply for the second and fifth residency.

Applications for the next residency (R4) are being taken now. This residency will run from May – June 2021. Applications close April 15th, 2021.  To apply for the CMS Artist In Residence program, please fill out the online application here.

Before the mid-19th century, dyes and paints were made from plant and mineral (and occasionally animal!) sources. Discover the world of natural color in our landscape, as we discuss historical ink-making, and learn to make a permanent black ink from easily accessible natural materials.

We will discuss the chemistry behind iron-tannin inks, the most widely used ink historically, and create our own indelible drawing and writing inks from pomegranate skins. Students will develop skills for identifying tannin sources in the environment, and be able to take this knowledge with them to continue to explore natural color sources. No previous experience necessary, this class is suitable for older teens and adults.

This class will be presented virtually via Zoom and class connection information will be sent out prior to the class.

TwinState MakerSpaces, Inc. Announces James St. Martin and Bryan Phaneuf as the Spring 2021 Artists In Residence

TwinState MakerSpaces, Inc., the nonprofit organization that operates the Claremont MakerSpace, in Claremont, New Hampshire is pleased to announce James St Martin and Bryan Phaneuf as our March / April Artists in Residence.  James and Bryan operate Doghouse Arcades, a small Claremont, New Hampshire based business specializing in Home Arcade and Virtual Pinball cabinetry and machines. 

“James and Bryan bring a fun and entertaining project to The Claremont MakerSpace through their home arcade business. As many of us have been spending so much more time at home over the past year, we can attest to the need for new ways to keep occupied. What better way than having your very own pinball or arcade set up?” said Brendan Dangelo, Director of Education at the Claremont MakerSpace.  “The Artist in Residence program provides an opportunity to showcase the versatility of the Claremont MakerSpace and the creativity of our local community of makers.  James and Bryan will utilize many of our high tech tools to expand into a new line – a collapsible and modular skeeball system”.

James St. Martin officially started Doghouse Arcades in November, 2020, but the idea has long been his dream. The business, named in honor of his father who passed away from cancer, is a nod to a tendency to take on “wild projects” and end up “in the doghouse.” His father’s love for pinball is another way in which St. Martin makes and creates in his memory.

“CMS provides a large space to really spread out for our projects as needed with a variety of accessible tools right at our fingertips. The Artist in Residency will be a great way for us to produce an open source and free to the community product that we would have otherwise not been able to make” said St. Martin.  Once completed, the project will be on display at The Claremont MakerSpace and will be available to be viewed by the public, by appointment.

In this free virtual learning class, learn how to use a laser cutter to cut a small wooden box. We will look at a variety of resources and watch the Claremont Makerspace laser cutter in action and give a demo of Corel Draw. This will be a great overview for anyone that has not laser cut before or are looking for some possible new tricks.

Introduction To Music Theory & Composition

3/29 – 6/14, 9:30 AM

Introduction to Music Theory & Composition takes a fun approach to grasping the fundamental ideas and tools that are used to compose music that resonates with us. With a range of listening exercises and composition games, this course teaches the language of Western music from the most basic elements through to more nuanced expressions. Participants are encouraged to bring recordings, questions, and observations to class for discussion as we unlock the secrets of what makes music meaningful.

Advanced Music Theory & Composition

3/29 – 6/14, 2:30 PM

Advanced Music Theory & Composition is for folks who have already taken the introductory as well intermediate courses and are looking to further expand and apply their music knowledge base. We will study how to employ dynamics, voicing, forms, examine Western music history and capitalize on tracking, mixing and mastering music composition software.

Students are encouraged to bring recordings, questions, and observations to class for discussion as we evolve our understandings of how to compose and record music with subtlety and nuance.

Intermediate Music Theory & Composition

3/29 – 6/14, 6 – 7 PM

 Intermediate Music Theory & Composition is for folks who have already taken an introductory and want to take it all to the next levels. We will get more deeply into alternative scale types, how to write harmony sections and how to use music composition software. Students are encouraged to bring recordings, questions, and observations to class for discussion as we delve more deeply into how to compose music which resonates with us.

Join us for Make A Chain Maille Bracelet. In this virtual class, we’ll create a Byzantine bracelet by weaving links of chain. Byzantine is an ancient pattern for weaving chain and is an excellent starting point for learning chain maille. The finished chain features an intricate appearance and great flexibility.

The ShopBot CNC router is a great tool for creating a wide range of projects including signs and furniture. In this beginner level virtual class, participants will learn the basic operation of the ShopBot CNC Router. Covered topics include the axis’, attaching material, the ShopBot software and basic safety. This class is presented free of charge and will be presented via Zoom. Upon registration, you will be sent a link to the Zoom connection information.
