About the Club

We are a new group of amateur and professional photographers meeting regularly to learn from each other, practice our craft, and develop the community of photographic artists, commercial photographers, and visual storytellers around Claremont and the Upper Valley. Meetings are free for CMS members, and open to the public with a fee to support operations at the MakerSpace. Each meeting is led by one of our members and focuses on a topic of interest chosen by the group: from technical workshops on shooting techniques, to photo critique sessions, gear show & tells, photo walks, and whatever else we come up with together.

Free for members/$10 for non-members

Have you ever wanted to design and cut a wooden part using a computer-controlled router?  This is your opportunity to learn how this is done.   The ShopBot is a computer-controlled router that can cut various materials with a high degree of precision.  This 3-session series of classes will teach students how to design wooden parts for cutting on the ShopBot.  These sessions are intended to get you proficient in designing parts using the Vectric VCarve Pro software and then cutting parts on the ShopBot.  The process starts using 2D design techniques in VCarve.  Once the design is complete, it is used to create toolpaths to cut parts on the ShopBot.  The class will walk students through this two-step process in detail.  After these sessions, the successful student will be well-prepared for certification on the ShopBot.   

$120 for members/$150 non-members

Thinking about trying out MIG welding? This is an introductory workshop in learning, safety, tools and techniques in MIG welding. No experience required.

Must provide your own safety glasses (we do have extras here), leather work shoes and leather gloves. Helmets, jackets and materials will be provided.

Join Berkley Heath for an afternoon of indigo dyeing! She will be demonstrating dyeing in her indigo vat and participants will be able to dye small samples of cotton fabric, and have the opportunity to bring an item from home to dye (note that this material needs to be clean and natural fiber–cotton, linen, wool, etc). Bring an old cotton T-shirt and dye it blue with natural indigo!

What Should You Bring: Clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, one clean item to dye (must be natural fiber to work!).

This class will teach participants the techniques for effective and reliable soldering on printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Both surface mount and through-hole soldering techniques will be explained through videos and lecture and hands on experience will be completed using kits made for soldering skills.

Join us for a practical, hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to assemble your coax jumpers using RG-58 and crimp-on PL-259 connectors. Led by longtime ham and bench tech Patrick Lozito, KC2EEB, this session will walk you through the process of prepping coax, attaching connectors, and testing for continuity with a digital voltmeter. Whether you’re new to cable work or just want to sharpen your technique, this is a great opportunity to build real skills and walk away with a custom 3-foot jumper you made yourself.

Discover the meditative art of mandala dot painting in this relaxing and beginner-friendly workshop. You’ll learn basic techniques to create stunning, symmetrical designs using simple tools and vibrant colors. No prior experience needed—just bring your creativity and leave with a beautiful, hand-painted mandala of your own. All materials provided.

Mordants are substances, generally metallic salts, that are used in combination with natural dyes to create lasting colors on cloth. Mordants can shift the tone and saturation of natural dyes such that, with the use of different mordant combinations, a wide range of colors can be created on a piece of cloth, and even from a single dye bath! In this class, we will create thickened mordant pastes to paint and print designs on cotton yardage. Inspired by traditional surface design techniques, we will make three dye vats with locally grown and foraged plants (madder, weld, and sumac) to create a wide range of shades and patterns on cloth. We will cover fabric preparation, making a printing surface, simple stamp-making, natural dye chemistry and history, as well as post dyeing fabric care. Students will create a color reference chart on cloth to use in future dyeing endeavors, as well as their own uniquely patterned pieces.

The NH Division for Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) is seeking adult volunteers to serve as a 1:1 mentor for teens in foster care. Adult mentors help youth build relationships, provide support and guidance, and serve as a role model, listener, motivator, and coach. A supportive, positive relationship with a trusted adult can enhance a young person’s self-esteem, increase academic performance, and lead to healthier lifestyle choices. 

During this information session about the DCYF Community Connect program, you will learn:

• How to become a mentor;
• Pre-service screening and training;
• The process for matching you with a teen, and available ongoing support; and
• What’s expected of you and what you can expect.

Registration is requested but not required. 

About the Presenter:  

This class is designed for people looking to learn how to use our mid-arm quilting machine, a Brother Dream Quilter 15. It can be used to quilt all sizes, from baby quilt to king size. Students will learn proper use of the Quilting Machine, the various parts; how to wind a bobbin and thread the machine. We’ll learn how to change the needle and insert the bobbin. We’ll put a quilt on using the special clamps and tension it properly. Everyone will take a turn sewing. We will all discuss how to troubleshoot issues that may arise. The cost of the class includes a one-on-one follow-up certification session for members may use the machine on their own after passing the certification.

The Claremont MakerSpace is excited to announce printmaker Sarah Breisch as the Summer Artist in Residence!  During her residency, Sarah will be learning  copperplate etching and teaching tetrapak printmaking. The theme of her work explores the representation of attachment and security, grief and isolation through metaphors from nature. Sarah will be working in studio and teaching until the end of September. 

Sarah’s artist statement: I find time for artwork in the margins between work and family life. Inspiration creeps out of small things; the delicate tracings of a beetle’s gnawing over dead wood, the patterns on a sparrow’s wing.  I am fascinated by patterns; of seasonal changes, camouflage, and the cyclical nature of growth and decay. The medium of linocut allows me to explore and express the patterns and details I see in nature and in life. The medium is paradoxically graphic, predictable and unyielding, while also being spontaneous, reproducing in infinite diversity. No two prints are ever exactly alike.

While at CMS, take a tour and learn about our workspaces:

• Wood shop: with all the necessary large and small tools for woodworking, plus a CNC Router
• Jewelry studio: covers tools needed for shaping, texturing, enameling and soldering
• Metal shop:  everything needed for working with metal, cutting, shaping, MIG, TIG and Stick welding, plasma cutting
• Fiber arts studio:  sewing machines, mid-arm quilter, looms, textile dyeing area and an embroidery machine
• Electronics lab:  provides tools for small electronics, 3D printers, a laser cutter, and a trinocular microscope
• Photography and craft studio: large format and photography printers, heat treat, Cricut cutter and member craft supplies
• Machine shop:  metrology tools, two manual mills, metal lathe, grinder and a CNC mill 

All shops will be open for tours and members/staff will be on hand to answer your questions.  

Everyone is welcome and this event is FREE, with light refreshments available. There is plenty of parking next door in the municipal parking garage. Registration is requested but not required. 

Open to all ages, children under 16 years old must be accompanied by their adult.

Join me for a full one-day exploration of weaving taking a “naked” loom and dressing it in beautiful colors. Then spend the day falling into the rhythm weaving your personal summer scarf.  This day long class will run from 9:30 – 5:30 with a lunch break mid class. Class includes your own loom for the day plus individualized instruction to ensure success.  A selection of weaving materials will be available for purchase at the start of the class.  Bring lunch, beverage and snacks.

Plasma cutting is a powerful and versatile means of cutting steel, aluminum, and other conductive materials, for applications ranging from heavy industry to abstract art. In Intro to Plasma Cutting, students will the learn the fundamental processes and techniques for handheld plasma cutting using the Claremont MakerSpace’s Hypertherm Powermax85 – and will get plenty of hands-on practice with the tool. The goal of this class is to prepare students to be certified to use the CMS’s plasma cutter, handheld, independently. 

If you have a piece of metal that you would like cut, please feel to bring it with you just check with John Lambert (ccdjohnbike@gmail.com OR info@claremontmakerspace.org) to make sure the size will work.

Would you like to learn how to use basic shop machinery to make a lovely hardwood serving/cutting board?  Then this is the course for you.  Starting with raw lumber you will learn how to make a useful and beautiful piece that can serve you or a special friend for years to come. In this course you will learn how to use the band saw, jointer, planer, table saw, chop saw, and router table safely and (for members) become certified to use these tools AND leave with a cutting board!

All tools, materials, and safety gear will be provided – though, students are welcome to bring their own tools and gear.

Unlock your inner designer in this playful two-day workshop that blends the charm of Ed Emberley’s drawing method with the power of digital design in Cuttle.xyz. Inspired by Emberley’s belief that anyone can draw using simple shapes, you’ll learn how to create your own laser-cuttable artwork. No drawing or design experience needed.

Please Note:Participants should be comfortable using a computer, including basic tasks like using a mouse or trackpad, navigating a website, and typing in a web browser.

In this course we will be discussing precision measurement. This class will cover the topic of metrology from the perspective of Modern Industrial Manufacturing. The goal of this class is for students leave with a greater understanding of why things are designed in a specific way and the measurements, methods and systems used to ensure those tolerances are achieved. There will be demonstrations of manufacturing, applications of measurement on various parts, and overall attention-to-detail skill development. Machine embroidery is a fun way to add embellishment to plain ready to wear garments and handmade items. You can create gift items, clothing, ornaments and many useful household items. I will show you how to select a design to be placed on a thumb drive. Also cover the different stabilizers used and how to set up the hoop with materials for embroidery. Then how to use the machine to embroider your item.

In this class we will explore elements that cultivate creative thinking and build confidence in expressing original ideas. We will have some time to engage in creative practice using random metal elements.

Bring your board by the shop and we will refinish it with some sanding and oiling till it’s (almost) as good as new. Beginner-friendly and all experiences welcome! Learn the principles of taking beautiful photos, how to cull and edit your work, then choose 1-2 to print on archival fine-art papers. This sounds dramatic, but you don’t truly know your photographs until you’ve seen them on paper. This course will also set you up for a planned autumn workshop on frame-making and mounting (stay tuned for details)

Please join us as we celebrate the end of Berkley Heath’s term as the Spring Artist in Residence (AiR) at CMS. This Closing Exhibit will feature Berkley’s new work produced during her residency, and will include a gallery sale of her work.  Her residency included leading a community indigo dyeing day, teaching the natural dyeing process and learning to use the laser cutter and Cricut to create new stencils for her work.

Plasma cutting is a powerful and versatile means of cutting steel, aluminum, and other conductive materials, for applications ranging from heavy industry to abstract art. In Intro to Plasma Cutting, students will the learn the fundamental processes and techniques for handheld plasma cutting using the Claremont MakerSpace’s Hypertherm Powermax85 – and will get plenty of hands-on practice with the tool. The goal of this class is to prepare students to be certified to use the CMS’s plasma cutter, handheld, independently.

In this course you will learn how to use the band saw, jointer, planer, table saw, chop saw, and router table safely and (for members) become certified to use these tools AND leave with a cutting board!

All tools, materials, and safety gear will be provided – though, students are welcome to bring their own tools and gear.

In this course we will be discussing precision measurement. This class will cover the topic of metrology from the perspective of Modern Industrial Manufacturing. The goal of this class is for students leave with a greater understanding of why things are designed in a specific way and the measurements, methods and systems used to ensure those tolerances are achieved. There will be demonstrations of manufacturing, applications of measurement on various parts, and overall attention-to-detail skill development. Please reach out if there are any questions about the course.

We are a new group of amateur and professional photographers meeting regularly to learn from each other, practice our craft, and develop the community of photographic artists, commercial photographers, and visual storytellers around Claremont and the Upper Valley. Each meeting is led by one of our members and focuses on a topic of interest chosen by the group: from technical workshops on shooting techniques, to photo critique sessions, gear show & tells, photo walks, and whatever else we come up with together.

Bring your board by the shop and we will refinish it with some sanding and oiling till it’s (almost) as good as new. Join Artist in Residence Berkley Heath for an afternoon of indigo dyeing! She will be demonstrating dyeing in her indigo vat and participants will be able to dye small samples of cotton fabric and have the opportunity to bring an item from home to dye (note that this material needs to be clean and natural fiber–cotton, linen, wool, etc). Bring an old cotton T-shirt and dye it blue with natural indigo!

Students will learn proper use of the Quilting Machine, the various parts; how to wind a bobbin and thread the machine. We’ll learn how to change the needle and insert the bobbin. We’ll put a quilt on using the special clamps and tension it properly. Everyone will take a turn sewing. We will all discuss how to troubleshoot issues that may arise. The cost of the class includes a one-on-one follow-up certification session for members may use the machine on their own after passing the certification.

In this class, we will create thickened mordant pastes to paint and print designs on cotton yardage. Learn how to make a rainwater collection barrel and garden irrigation system using well proven techniques.

In this class, the instructor will present in a classroom and hands on in the shop demonstrating how to fabricate a rain water collection system using recycled blue 55 gallon barrels and plastic plumbing pipe and fittings. The first hour will be classroom instruction and short videos. The remainder will be in the shop modifying a barrel for water catchment and demonstrating how to fabricate and interconnect input and discharge plumbing.

This free basic sewing class is directed at youth ages 15 and up (parent/guardians are welcome to join) to become comfortable enough sewing and using the tools to participate in Wednesday’s PRIDE Quilting event (sign up for that here: Youth PRIDE Quilting. Learn how to use the Singer Heavy Duty Sewing Machines we have at Claremont MakerSpace. Participants will learn the parts of the sewing machines, how to change needles and presser feet, wind a bobbin and thread the machine, how to get the right tension, trouble shoot problems, sew basic stitches and stretch stitches, and buttonholes. 

This class will end at 5 pm giving participants time to walk to Broad St. Park for the flag raising.

In this 3-session class we take our inspiration from katazome, a Japanese printmaking technique using sticky rice paste and hand-cut stencils to create vibrant patterns on cloth. We will discuss the traditional methods of making katazome prints and present some modern techniques that can be used in a home studio. Students will be provided with cloth to print and dye. This class is suitable for all experience levels.

W1CMS is proud to host Twin State Radio Club’s testing session. This is an opportunity to get your Technician license or upgrade from Technician to General or from General to Extra.

The doors open at 9:30 a.m. for registration, and testing begins at 10:00. In preparation, be sure to read and follow the instructions from ARRL, https://www.arrl.org/what-to-bring-to-an-exam-session. Drop-ins are OK, but it would be helpful to know who is planning to attend.

In this class you will learn the techniques and process of making a one-of-a-kind handmade coptic stitch notebook with a Claremont MakerSpace twist: We’ll start at the laser cutter where we’ll cut out wooden covers with custom designs. Then, we’ll learn about the Coptic binding method.

This is a great class for a beginner or young person (with an adult partner) interested in laser cutters, books, or hand-sewing.

Create a unique chainmail bracelet that requires no soldering. In this workshop, you will make a Byzantine chain bracelet suitable for anyone. Byzantine is an ancient pattern for weaving chain and is an excellent starting point for learning chainmail. 

We’ll also touch on how the basics of how jump rings are made and how to open and close jump rings properly. Students will also learn to cut their own jump rings. This class is a great starting point for those wanting to explore the world of chain making. Start your chainmail addiction today (selection of rings may vary).

We will cover topics that you are interested in, using whatever equipment you would like to learn. This is a CMS member-guest event.  Come share your cuttings of house plants AND/OR outdoor plants and transplant some new ones to take home.  Bring your own pots and CMS will provide potting soil.  We’ll also spruce up the front of the building with a few planters. Afterward, we’ll grill hot dogs and veggie dogs in the parking lot. Bring a side dish if you like. 

Felicia will be your host, and you will get to know other members who have a green thumb and love to garden.  Please register so we know how much soil and dogs to provide.

We are a new group of amateur and professional photographers meeting regularly to learn from each other, practice our craft, and develop the community of photographic artists, commercial photographers, and visual storytellers around Claremont and the Upper Valley. Meetings are free for CMS members, and open to the public with a fee to support operations at the MakerSpace. Each meeting is led by one of our members and focuses on a topic of interest chosen by the group: from technical workshops on shooting techniques, to photo critique sessions, gear show & tells, photo walks, and whatever else we come up with together.

Both surface mount and through-hole soldering techniques will be explained through videos and lecture and hands on experience will be completed using kits made for soldering skills.

The class will teach students how to design wooden parts for cutting on the ShopBot. The ShopBot is a computer-controlled router that can cut various materials with a high degree of precision. These three training sessions are intended to get you proficient in designing parts in VCarve and then cutting them on the ShopBot.  The process starts using 2D design techniques in VCarve. Once the design is complete, it is used to cut the part on the ShopBot.

W1CMS is proud to host Twin State Radio Club’s testing session. This is an opportunity to get your Technician license or upgrade from Technician to General or from General to Extra.

The doors open at 9:30 a.m. for registration, and testing begins at 10:00. In preparation, be sure to read and follow the instructions from ARRL, https://www.arrl.org/what-to-bring-to-an-exam-session. Drop-ins are OK, but it would be helpful to know who is planning to attend.

The Claremont MakerSpace is excited to announce textile artist Berkley Heath as the Spring Artist in Residence!

Berkley is a natural dyer and printmaker fascinated by the sources and history of art materials. With a formal education and work background in ecological design and organic agriculture, she began growing dye plants nearly ten years ago and since then has cultivated a dye garden every year, processing the plants throughout the season into dyes, pigments, and inks to use in her work. Her work is grounded in these seasonal processes at her home in Claremont: spending time seeding, tending to plants, harvesting and making art materials, as well as studying and experimenting with traditional surface design techniques with natural dyes on cloth. She teaches workshops at craft schools and farms across New England, and she believes that physical interaction with the landscape facilitates a sense of place, wellbeing, and stewardship of our natural world.    https://www.berkleysierra.com/
