Using a pre-cut, ready to use pumpkin, students will learn about the materials used to create a pumpkin floral arrangement. Students will learn the names of all of the flowers and greens used in the project and how to keep them looking fresh for as long as possible. The instructor will demonstrate her method for approaching a beautiful, pleasing design, step by step. Each student will go home with a completed floral arrangement.

About the Instructor(s): Victoria Loring is the owner and designer at Mica Mine Floral In Unity, NH. She has been in the floral design industry for at least 10 years and 2 years on my own. Flowers are her passion and she loves the process of creating custom arrangements for each person she works with. She is looking forward to sharing some of this knowledge with you!

This two hour workshop walks you through the steps to create a “Gnome for the Holidays” ornament.

No experience necessary, you need only bring your desire to have fun and create!

Each participant will receive one DIY Gnome Kit, which includes two engraved pieces (Christmas 2023 and Gnome for the Holidays). In addition, you will have access to the paints and supplies necessary to create your Gnome and I will be there to guide you through the process, giving you as much or as little assistance as you desire.

Come alone and make friends. Bring friends and have a laugh. Come with family and make a memory. Gnome matter the reason, this workshop was designed with you in mind!

Participants will leave with a completed ornament.

My creations utilize a variety of mediums, including clay, paper, wood and glass.

My interest in laser cut products began at the MakerSpace!  The desire to create utilizing the innovative technology of a laser cutter led me to invest in my own Glowforge.  As a result, I am constantly exploring the boundaries of creativity and craftsmanship. Through this cutting-edge laser cutter, I am able to transform various materials into unique and captivating products that blend artistry with functionality.

We have all manner of projects going at the MakerSpace and this is a chance to show yours off. Anything you’re working on at home works, too. There’s something for everyone at a Show & Tell — be it artistry, engineering, or pure craftsmanship. We always enjoy seeing the wild ideas people bring!

Bring a work-in-progress or even your notebook sketches. Develop your ideas further, open them up to discussion, and take them to the next level while enjoying fun and fellowship with other members.

You will learn about wood selection, milling it “foursquare”, and designing a layout.  Then you will practice gluing it up and sanding it (wet and dry) before applying mineral oil and beeswax.

All tools, materials, and safety gear will be provided – though, students are welcome to bring their own tools and gear.

About the Instructor(s): Peter Gunn is a long time high school history teacher who loves wood from trees to the table.  Eight years ago he began taking woodworking courses and has been practicing steadily ever since.  He loves working on the lathe and with the jointer and planer to reveal the beauty of wood and make useful things.  Learning to make a cutting board encouraged him to develop his skills and nurtured his appreciation of what wood can become.  During the holidays in 2020, when Covid altered so much of our world, he began making cutting/serving boards to raise money for local food pantries.  Almost three years and over two hundred boards later, he is excited to share his knowledge.  He hopes people will enjoy making something uniquely beautiful and growing their skills and self-confidence in the process.

It is a session time to use expensive or complicated equipment with a knowledgeable person that can give guidance.

Always wanted to make your own clothes? Own a sewing machine and afraid to use it? A little rusty and looking to brush up? We are here for you! You may use our machines or bring your own. Class includes an overview of the Textile shop and if you want a tour of the Claremont MakerSpace, we will be happy to provide one when the class is over. 

We have scrap ,material you can use or bring your own! We also have a lot of thread colors. We will make a small basket from fabric!  How to Sew Easy Baskets with 10″ Squares – Layer Cake Leftover Project! (sewcanshe.com)  Cutting squares safely is part of the orientation.

You will learn about choosing fabric and thread and the importance of being matchy matchy. Also, how to cut your fabric -squarely and safely and why ironing is so important. Pieces and parts of a typical sewing machine will be covered. Then on to using the machine – bobbins and threading, basic and decorative stitching, and sewing straight lines and neat corners. 

Please wear a solid pair of shoes, sewing machines are heavy!  Because the machines and fabric can be damaged or stained by spills, any drinks brought to class must be in a covered container.

I have been sewing since I was about 6 and my concentration was on Baby doll clothes.  I hadn’t even advanced to owning a Barbie Doll. My mom is my inspiration and my first teacher. I have sewn costumes for several plays, including one for which my daughter, now a costume designer, earned a Kennedy Center award. I have sewn on purpose real maternity clothes on an antique treadle machine.”

Learn VCarve and the ShopBot

Back by popular demand!  We are planning a set of three training sessions for users to learn the VCarve software application and the ShopBot.  The VCarve application by Vectric is used to design parts, which are cut by the Shopbot.  The ShopBot is a computer-controlled router that can cut various materials with a high degree of precision.  These three training sessions are intended to get you proficient in using these systems.  After these sessions, the successful student will be well-prepared for certification on the ShopBot.

Session 1, VCarve part 1:

The first session will introduce the user to 2D design using Vectric VCarve.  We’ll start with a review of user interface and progress to using its CAD features draw parts we plan to make.  The use of various drawing tools will be discussed in addition to managing and importing vector files.  We will use these drawing tools in VCarve to design a sign. 

Session 2, VCarve part 2:

The second session will introduce the selection of router bits and how to control the chip load of the bit in the ShopBot.  We will also review router bit management using the tool database.  When our sign design is complete, we will discuss the CAM features in VCarve and construct tool paths.  We will learn how to save and export these toolpaths for cutting the sign in the ShopBot.

Session 3, Using the ShopBot:

This session will start with a review of the safety features of the ShopBot.  This will be followed by a discussion of the machine components, holding down the work piece and setting the X, Y and Z axis.  Finally, we will discuss the workflow used to manage the created toolpaths and, finally, cut the sign we designed in class.

About the Instructor(s): Russ Scaduto received his doctorate from Indiana University and then spent 34 years at the Penn State University College of Medicine where he conducted research and taught graduate and medical students.   Retirement in 2018 brough Russ to New Hampshire, where he joined the Claremont Makerspace to further pursue his woodworking hobby.  In the Spring of this year, Russ was juried in as a craftsman in the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen.

About the Instructor: Allison Zito received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of the Arts. Her artwork has been exhibited in numerous museums including The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, The Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA, The Delaware Art Museum, The Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art.  Allison has decades of teaching experience, having taught a variety of classes at The Philadelphia Museum of Art, at Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, PA, and at the University of Pennsylvania Morris Arboretum. She has taught Studio Art in the Upper Valley at AVA Gallery and Art Center, Craftstudies at Hanover League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, ArtisTree, and Claremont Maker Space with stunning results.  Allison Zito was awarded The Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 for her work as an artist and art educator. In 2019 Allison was awarded an Artist in Residency at The Claremont Maker Space. There she created an art installation addressing the issue of Global Warming and she organized a symposium on site, to inspire positive action within the greater community. Allison created two local public art murals in 2021, one for The Sullivan County Conservation District in Unity and Allison created the Bee and the Monarch Medallions on the Lebanon Art Tunnel Way Pollinator Mural. Making a statement and creating beautiful art as a way to open a conversation that leads to a better world, is the cornerstone of Allison’s career as an artist and art educator.

This is an exciting class for anyone who enjoys wire sculpting jewelry with gem stones. The frame and bail are sculpted with brass wire and the tree is sculpted with copper wire. The front of the stone is covered with the tree sculpture and a few gemstone chip leaves on the tree. The back has a simple wire frame. Students will; develop their expertise with wire sculpture for jewelry; learn the basics of creating a solid wire frame for an oval gemstone and learn how to sculpt a tree with branches, leaves and roots from wire. Each participant will produce a beautiful wire sculpted gem stone pendant.

This is an advanced beginner class so the participants should already know: the use of wire working tools, the preparation and the uses of wire in sculpting jewelry. We will create a pendant using an oval banded green agate gemstone, gemstone chips, brass and copper wire.

The frame and bail are woven with different weaves.  The front of the stone is covered in wire netting and the back has a simple wire sculpture. Students will develop their expertise with wire weaving and wire sculpture for jewelry.  Each participant will produce a beautiful wire woven gem stone pendant.

This is an intermediate class so the participants should already know how to weave wire.  We will create an intricate pendant using an oval gemstone and copper wire.

A serger, often referred to as an overlock, is a specialized sewing machine that finishes raw edges of fabric to prevent them from fraying. They’re commonly used to finish and reinforce seams, hem clothing, and more.

In this beginner-level workshop, users will learn how to safely operate the MakerSpace’s ELNA Pro 5 DC serger and there will be several other machines available to see and practice on. We’ll explore the factory presets and explore the basics, including threading, how the cutting blade works, and how to adjust the machine correctly. Come learn how to operate the serger and discover how you can put it to use for your next project!

Supplies and materials will be provided for the class.

Note: Participants of this workshop will have the opportunity to get certified to use the MakerSpace’s sergers on their own. If you already have substantial experience using sergers, you may be eligible to test out of this introductory class. About the Instructor(s): JoAnn Weeks has taught a variety of classes for the major craft chain stores plus numerous adult ed classes and at senior centers over the years. She has also created seasonal displays for craft stores. JoAnn created the Welcome signs in the photo by applying vinyl appliques cut with a Cricut to pre-stained pine wood, finished with a top coat of urethane.

Would you like to learn how to use basic shop machinery to make a lovely hardwood serving/cutting board?  Then this is the course for you.  Starting with raw lumber you will learn how to make a useful and beautiful piece that can serve you or a special friend for years to come.

You will learn about wood selection, milling it “foursquare”, and designing a layout.  Then you will practice gluing it up and sanding it (wet and dry) before applying mineral oil and beeswax.

All tools, materials, and safety gear will be provided – though, students are welcome to bring their own tools and gear.

About the Instructor(s): Peter Gunn is a long time high school history teacher who loves wood from trees to the table.  Eight years ago he began taking woodworking courses and has been practicing steadily ever since.  He loves working on the lathe and with the jointer and planer to reveal the beauty of wood and make useful things.  Learning to make a cutting board encouraged him to develop his skills and nurtured his appreciation of what wood can become.  During the holidays in 2020, when Covid altered so much of our world, he began making cutting/serving boards to raise money for local food pantries.  Almost three years and over two hundred boards later, he is excited to share his knowledge.  He hopes people will enjoy making something uniquely beautiful and growing their skills and self-confidence in the process.

This class is intended for anyone who would like an introduction to wirework jewelry making or anyone who would like to make sized wirework rings. The first half hour will introduce types, shapes, gauges and hardness of wire, the basic wire tools and how to use them and basic techniques for wirework and Wire Sculpture in jewelry. The rest of the class will be used to create a birthstone ring. We will use copper wire for sculpting in class and a cubic zirconia for the birthstone ring with a sterling silver setting.

This class has a two prong focus. The first is how to weave wire bails for pendants or earrings. The second is time to explore Freeform wire sculpting on a large donut gemstone using wire and other stones and crystals.

We will be using copper and brass wire, a gemstone doughnut, small gemstone beads and crystals.

All students need to see tiny work so bring a magnifier if you need one. Also, closed toe shoes are required in the studio. If the student wishes to polish their piece, hair must be tied back and no jewelry can be worn.
