Next week, join us for Make A Copper Valentine Rose.

This Valentine’s Day, make a Copper Forever Rose for that someone special in your life!  In this awesome, hands-on class, you’ll gain lots of new metal working skills by cutting, bending, texturing, layer, and soldering copper sheet to create a beautiful, 3-dimensional, life-size rose.  We will supply the copper and all tools you’ll need to form your forever flower, plus of course hands on instruction and two evenings full of fun. Who knows, maybe we’ll even bring chocolate…

Intro to Arduino

February 7th, 6 – 8:30 PM

This class is truly designed with the beginner in mind and serves as a great introduction to the world of physical computing! It is for anyone who has never played around with Arduino before and those who have played around a little bit but aren’t entirely sure about how the basics work. We’ll blink some lights, turn some motors, read some sensors and make a little noise. We’ll touch on some very basic programming and prototyping concepts as well!

12 and up. Under 12 are welcome with an adult partner or if they’ve been approved by the instructor.

Class fee includes one REXQualis Arduino UNO R3 Project Basic Starter Kit or a ELEGOO UNO Project Basic Starter Kit to take home after the class to continue making projects!

Laptops will be provided. Familiarity with Windows is strongly suggested. Non-members should bring a USB drive if they wish to save any work done in class. Please contact electronics@claremontmakerspace.org about the possibility of bringing your own laptop.

This Saturday, join us for a special event with artist Rober O’Brien, Painting the Portrait in Watercolor.

The human portrait will be explored in this workshop. Students will learn to paint a portrait with all of its nuances and subtleties in watercolor using a layering process. Other mediums are welcome. Students will paint from photo references. The instructor will paint, as a demonstration, a finished portrait, and will explain each step of the painting process as a morning demo. Students will paint in the afternoon and are encouraged to bring reference photos of a favorite portrait subject. I will also provide reference photos. A critique and class discussion will be held at the end of the session. The class is open to all abilities though some drawing experience is recommended. No materials are included in the cost of the class. For a list of materials, please email brendan@claremontmakerspace.org

Make A Silver Ring

January 29th, 5:30 – 8:30 pm

In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of silver-smithing while you make a simple silver ring! The instructor will guide you through various options for how to embellish your band, the shape of which you will get to choose.  You’ll try soldering and learn how to polish your finished product into a beautiful ring! No experience necessary. All materials will be provided, and $5 materials fee is included in the registration cost.

*Want to turn your set stone into a ring?  Sign up for one of the ring classes earlier or in the month! Be sure to let the instructor know this is what you plan to do with your stone so you can plan your design accordingly! One space remains!

The Claremont Makerspace’s laser cutter/engraver is an incredibly capable tool which can be used for making high precision cuts and engravings on a wide variety of materials. In this three hour class, we’ll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the “go” button on the laser. After learning the basics, each student will create a simple design and cut it on the laser!

Although advanced design and computer skills aren’t required to take this course, in order to attend the optional follow-up certification session (to get approved to use the CMS’s laser cutter/engraver on your own) you will need to be comfortable operating and navigating the Windows-based computer. 

More technically inclined students may bring a laptop and a USB jump drive to class. You may choose to install Inkscape or a free trial of Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw (the laser cutter workstation has a CorelDraw license) before you come to class to get familiar with the software and start on a vector design project. 

Participants will leave this class with a small demo project. Supplies will be included in the cost of ticket.

Learn to Set A Simple Stone

Mondays, January 27th and February 3rd, 5 – 8pm both days

In this beginner class you’ll be given a stone cabochon and silver sheet to create a bezel to set it in!  The instructor will guide you through creating a simple design, how to create your bezel, and finally how to turn it into either a simple pendant or add it to a silver ring if you’ve taken the ring class!  You’ll learn a fun and essential skill to jewelry making: how to set a stone!

Third Monday Drawing Club

A special Fourth Monday – ‘Third Monday Drawing Club!’

Come join instructor Lissa Malloy in a once a month drawing club. Each class will feature a new still life with an opportunity to learn value scales, how to draw from sight in several methods, and even different art styles (realism, futurism, cubism, impressionism, modernism, illustrative). Participants will learn to use charcoal, conte, and graphite.  Please bring your own supplies (sketch book, drawing board, large drawing pad, pencils, charcoal, conte crayons). If you have questions of where best to acquire supplies, we will connect you with the instructor. This class is open to ages 12 & up.

Starting tonight and running Thursdays January 9th – January 30th from 6 – 8 PM, join us for  Introduction to Schematic Capture and Circuit Board Design with KiCAD.This course will introduce you to KiCAD, a free and open-source design suite for electronic design. KiCAD allows you to enter an electronic schematic into your computer and then use that schematic to design a printed circuit board. We will take you through example designs so you can see the process from one end to the other and be able to go on to design your own circuit boards.

We will discuss how to then get boards fabricated, either doing it yourself or sending out for production. These days, a lot of interesting components are available in surface-mount packages so we will talk about using those as well. They really are not as difficult as they may seem, easier in some ways, any they give you a wider range of possibilities when it comes to designing and fabricating your circuits.

If people are interested, they can have boards fabricated and we’ll have an extra class once the boards arrive to assemble them and, if it applies, to experience surface-mount soldering.

We recommend that you bring a three-button mouse with a scroll-wheel. The kind where the middle button is found by pushing down the scroll-wheel works okay. If you wish to bring your own laptop, that’s great. Install KiCAD 5.1.4 [or version 5.1.5 if it comes out before the class] before you come and remember to load the component and footprint libraries. The 3d libraries are optional as they take a *lot* of disk space. The MakerSpace also has laptops and a few desktop machines you can use as well; bring a thumb drive so you can take your designs home.

You can also bring your own design that you want to make. We’ll work through the examples together but you can branch off and do your own too. Unless you have a solid background in electronics, it’s best not to go too complicated for your first one.

Beginner Zentangle

Monday, January 13th, 6 – 8 PM

Zentangle® is a simple-to-learn method to create beautiful art by drawing simple patterns. The process is a mindful and meditative art form that some use to enhance creativity, increase focus, or just to relax. In this class, participants will learn philosophy, method, and approach to creating Zentangle art. Students will put pen to paper and learn to tangle beautiful patterns on small square paper tiles. All materials will be provided by the instructor in class. If you can draw a line and very basic shapes, you can create beautiful work! No artistic experience is required, but artists looking to incorporate something new into their practice are welcome.

Ages 12 & up. 

8 – 12 allowed with parent/ guardian accompaniment.

In Fundamental Selling Skill & Pitch Practice, you will learn that selling is really about effectively building relationships and listening to your clients. You’ll leave feeling empowered with selling skills you can apply today and an elevator pitch you can modify to fit any customer segment! Topics may include but are not limited to:

• The psychology of selling
• Identify your unique selling proposition
• Selling benefits vs. features
• Describe what your business does in interesting language conveying the value you provide your customers
• Presenting yourself effectively and comfortably
• The importance of following up
• Learn how to adapt your pitch based on your goal and the audience
• Learn how to keep the conversation going with open ended questions – your call to action

Fundamental Selling Skill & Pitch Practice is a two-part series happening on Wednesday’s, January 8th and 15th, 6:00pm – 8:00pm and partial scholarships are available. Registration closes December 20th!

This time of year we measure home heating leaks by both the temperature and the wallet.  Join the nonprofits COVER and Claremont Makerspace for a day on weatherization education.  Weatherization 101 will start with a classroom session covering topics including basic building science, basic materials and tools and DIY weatherization techniques. Do you have specific questions about your home? Bring them and have the professionals from COVER provide the answer.

Part two of our day will include an on-site visit at a Claremont residence to practice techniques and learn more. Topics covered will include an initial walk through of house to identify key areas, a blower-door test, exploring with infrared camera and weatherizing!

Registration for this event is free.  Weatherization 101 happens this Saturday, December 14th starting at 10 am. Please register in advance here.

Join us for a special event on Saturday, December 7th, ‘Introduction to Watercolor: Painting the Winter Landscape’ with instructor Robert O’Brien. 

 Painting the beautiful New England winter landscape in watercolor will be explored in this one-day workshop. Glazing techniques and layering of the subtle tints of snow will be introduced. Value, composition and painting light and shadow will be emphasized. Students will work from photo reference and learn to create a finished painting from a favorite winter subject. The instructor will demonstrate his approach and will provide hands on guidance to each student. A critique will be held at the end of the session.

Instructor Robert O’Brien

Born 1954, in Rochester, NY, Robert O’Brien has been painting in the watercolor medium for over forty years. Since moving to Vermont in 1977, he has focused his work on landscape and architectural studies. Vermont, with its distinct four season climate, provides the artist with a wealth of subject matter and ever changing light effects.

The artist finds beauty in the ordinary, subtle reminders of everyday life in rural New England. In his own words, he is driven “to capture the vanishing landscape in my paintings” before they disappear forever as a result of the steady hand of “progress”.

Since 1998, Robert O’Brien has traveled often to Southern France. The region’s sun-splashed landscape and timeless quality of light has added a new dimension to the artist’s paintings.

Join us for a night of board games at the CMS. What better way to spend a chilly November evening than playing games and making new friends? All are welcome! Make A Small Sign

Monday, November 25th, 5:30 – 7 PM

The Claremont Makerspace ShopBot is a versatile tool that can be used to make toys, furniture and with certain bits, elegant lettering for signs.  In this introductory class we will do a demo of the ShopBot’s text capabilities and participants will leave with a small sign with their chosen text which then can be finished. 

Note: This class will include a basic demo of the ShopBot’s text capabilities. For a more in-depth overview of the machine, please sign up for one of our Intro to CNC Routing classes.

Intro to 3D Printing is for anyone that has zero to little experience with 3D Printing.  We will provide an overview of 3D printers and the printing process – covering everything from the way 3D printers are built through the ways we use them to create objects. In this beginner level class, we will discuss different methods of 3D printing and cover the fundamental steps for designing and printing models. Participants will get to know how the MakerSpace’s printers – the LulzBot Taz 6 and Lulzbot Mini – work, and how to use them safely. Following the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to sign-up for certification sessions on these machines, so that they can use them on their own at the CMS.

Make A Bat House

Tuesday, November 12th, 5:30 – 8:30 PM

It’s that time of year! Brown Bats begin to look for a winter residence, often seen squeezing through and into cracks, nooks and crannies in our homes. These beneficial mammals will consume hundreds of mosquitoes a day all they need is a suitable place to winter over.  Join us for this introductory woodworking class as we build bat houses and finish them with personal touches. Simple woodworking tools will be utilized to construct a ready to hang bat house.

Each class will feature a new still life with an opportunity to learn value scales, how to draw from sight in several methods, and even different art styles (realism, futurism, cubism, impressionism, modernism, illustrative). Participants will learn to use charcoal, conte, and graphite.  Please bring your own supplies (sketch book, drawing board, large drawing pad, pencils, charcoal, conte crayons). If you have questions of where best to acquire supplies, we will connect you with the instructor. This class is open to ages 12 & up.

Intro to Laser Cutting

Monday, November 18th, 6:00 – 8:00 PM

The Claremont Makerspace’s laser cutter/engraver is an incredibly capable tool which can be used for making high precision cuts and engravings on a wide variety of materials. In this three hour class, we’ll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the “go” button on the laser. After learning the basics, each student will create a simple design and cut it on the laser!

Although advanced design and computer skills aren’t required to take this course, in order to attend the optional follow-up certification session (to get approved to use the CMS’s laser cutter/engraver on your own) you will need to be comfortable operating and navigating the Windows-based computer. 

Intro to Sewing: Make A Recycled Bag

Tuesday, November 19th, 6:00 – 8:00 PM

Want to help solidify your basic sewing skills while making a tough (yet pretty!) grocery tote? Using grain feed bags we will up-cycle these to reusable grocery totes!  Choice of pictures and colors available. Do you love Horses? Pigs? Dogs? Purple? Pink? Many choices! And environmentally friendly. This is a great project to help you learn to sew, or practice your basic skills!

This week you have two chances to develop your jewelry skills at CMS! 

Tonight, start to Learn to Set a Simple Stone & Wednesday, Make A Silver Ring!

In Learn to Set A Simple Stone, you’ll be given a stone cabochon and silver sheet to create a bezel to set it in!  The instructor will guide you through creating a simple design, how to create your bezel, and finally how to turn it into either a simple pendant or add it to a silver ring if you’ve taken the ring class!  You’ll learn a fun and essential skill to jewelry making: how to set a stone! Only One Space Remains!

In Make A Silver Ring, you’ll learn the basics of silver-smithing while you make a simple silver ring! The instructor will guide you through various options for how to embellish your band, the shape of which you will get to choose.  You’ll try soldering and learn how to polish your finished product into a beautiful ring! No experience necessary. All materials will be provided, and $5 materials fee is included in the registration cost. Only Two Spaces Remain!

3D Print Club

Every Tuesday, 6 PM

Join us for 3D PRINT CLUB! Every week, we’ll get together and participate in an open design session. This event is all about self-directed learning and hanging out with other people working on 3D designs or prints. Bring your own laptop or make use of the (first come-first-serve) Makerspace laptops loaded with Fusion 360.

Intro to Arduino

Monday, November 11th, 6 – 8:30 PM

This class is truly designed with the beginner in mind and serves as a great introduction to the world of physical computing! It is for anyone who has never played around with Arduino before and those who have played around a little bit but aren’t entirely sure about how the basics work. We’ll blink some lights, turn some motors, read some sensors and make a little noise. We’ll touch on some very basic programming and prototyping concepts as well!

12 and up. Under 12 are welcome with an adult partner or if they’ve been approved by the instructor.

Class fee includes one REXQualis Arduino UNO R3 Project Basic Starter Kit to take home after the class to continue making projects!

Make A Bat House

Tuesday, November 12th, 5:30 – 8:30 PM

It’s that time of year! Brown Bats begin to look for a winter residence, often seen squeezing through and into cracks, nooks and crannies in our homes. These beneficial mammals will consume hundreds of mosquitoes a day all they need is a suitable place to winter over.  Join us for this introductory woodworking class as we build bat houses and finish them with personal touches. Simple woodworking tools will be utilized to construct a ready to hang bat house.  

Intro to 3D Printing

Wednesday, November 13th, 6:30 – 8:30 PM

Intro to 3D Printing is for anyone that has zero to little experience with 3D Printing.  We will provide an overview of 3D printers and the printing process – covering everything from the way 3D printers are built through the ways we use them to create objects. In this beginner level class, we will discuss different methods of 3D printing and cover the fundamental steps for designing and printing models. Participants will get to know how the MakerSpace’s printers – the LulzBot Taz 6 and Lulzbot Mini – work, and how to use them safely. Following the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to sign-up for certification sessions on these machines, so that they can use them on their own at the CMS.
