Are you looking to start your career in the skilled trades? Trade Up Claremont is a FREE training program designed to equip you with the skills and hands-on experience needed to enter the workforce or grow in your career.

This program is a partnership between Claremont MakerSpace (CMS) and Sugar River Valley Regional Tech Center (SRVRTC) bringing together expert-led instruction and hands-on training.

What You’ll Gain

Industry-Recognized Training & Certifications

Custom Soft Skills Training – Develop essential workplace soft skills, including communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. This portion of the program has been customized to the needs of Trade Up Claremont participants and is directly relevant to the skills you will need in the workforce. (6 hours, in person)

OSHA 10 Certification – Learn workplace safety fundamentals to enhance your employability in skilled trades. (10 hours, online training)

Technical Training at SRVRTC – Hands-on instruction in Facility Maintenance and Machining & Manufacturing with certified instructors. (42 hours over 7 weeks, in-person training)

Practical Experience at Claremont MakerSpace – Apply your training with project-based learning and CMS mentor oversight. (2-month CMS membership included)


Who Can Apply?

This program is open to ANY individuals looking to enter or advance in the skilled trades, including:
Career changers or those interested in learning about the trades and manufacturing
High school graduates or GED holders
Veterans looking for a new opportunity
Moms looking to reenter the workforce
Must be at least 18 years of age to apply

We are offering five training sessions with a maximum of 10 participants per session. Some sessions will run in parallel to accommodate demand.

  • Soft Skills Training: Must be completed FIRST, attendance is required
  • Classroom instruction at SRVTC in Claremont, NH
  • OSHA10: Self-paced online, FREE, completion is required to finish the program
  • Claremont MakerSpace Practical Experience: Free CMS 2-month membership with projects led by our shop lead mentors beginning mid-May
  • CMS can provide wifi, computers, and space to participate in the online components if needed

What is Trade Up Claremont?

Trade Up Claremont is a free workforce development program that provides hands-on training in skilled trades such as facilities maintenance and machining. The program is designed to help adults gain marketable skills and transition into stable, high-demand careers.


Who is this program for?

This program is ideal for:

  • Military veterans looking to transition to civilian careers
  • Parents or caregivers re-entering the workforce
  • Mid-career individuals seeking a career change or upward mobility
  • Anyone ready to gain hands-on experience and able to commit to the training program

When does the next session start?

The Fall 2025 cohort begins on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.


How long is the program?

Trade Up Claremont runs for 7 weeks of classroom instruction PLUS 2 months of MakerSpace membership and includes a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on technical training, and career readiness support.


What will I learn?

Participants will learn:

  • Basic and intermediate machining or facilities maintenance skills
  • Workplace safety and tool operation
  • Job readiness skills, including communication, teamwork, and interview prep
  • How to succeed in a trade-based career

Is the program really free?

Yes! Thanks to generous support from Northern Border Regional Commission, Trade Up Claremont is offered at no cost to participants. Tools and safety gear are provided.


Do I need prior experience?

No prior experience is necessary. We welcome beginners and career changers. All you need is a willingness to learn and a commitment to showing up.


What’s the schedule like? Can I still work or take care of my kids?

Classes are typically held during weekday afternoon hours, with occasional flexibility. The schedule is designed to be manageable for parents, caregivers, and individuals balancing part-time work. Let us know your needs—we may be able to accommodate.


Is childcare provided?

While we do not provide on-site childcare, we can connect you to local partners who may offer family support services. We are happy to work with you to find a workable solution.


Will I get a job after the program?

Our goal is to help every participant transition into employment. We work closely with local employers and while we can’t guarantee a job, many graduates find employment quickly after completing the program. Our employer partners have expressed interest in hiring graduates from the program.
