Greetings Upper Valley Makers:

Summer is finally in full swing, and we have several brand-new classes for you to check out this month. Make sure you are following our Facebook page so you can enter to win our weekly “Maker Monday” giveaway. Just like the post and leave a comment to be entered. This Monday we will draw a winner for a gorgeous Christmas themed quilted table cover made by our craft shop lead and fibers instructor Tammy Davis. Tammy is teaching a “Christmas in July” class next week, sign up below!

For most classes and events, CMS MEMBERSHIP IS NOT REQUIRED. That said, members receive a discount on registration and there are some classes/events that are for members only (this will be clearly noted in the event description).

July 8, 2025 6 p.m. — July 8, 2025 9 p.m.

Bring your electronics projects and supplies and have fun visiting with other Electronics Enthusiasts. Work on your projects in our stocked Electronics and Digital Fabrication Lab. In addition to the MakerSpace’s soldering irons, diagnostic tools, and parts library, there will be some LED soldering kits and soldering irons available for purchase as well.
 
Hang out, finish your projects, think about future projects, and just enjoy being around other electronics enthusiasts.

Tiffany, the Electronics Shop Lead, is here to help folks get started, locate tools and parts, and support a fun, collaborative environment. Attendees are encouraged to share knowledge, but please note this isn’t a repair service, and there may not be anyone available for one-on-one troubleshooting.

Creativity fuels design and design gives form to creativity. We draw on creativity for self-expression, art, problem solving, communication and innovation. In this class we will explore elements that cultivate creative thinking and build confidence in expressing original ideas. We will have some time to engage in creative practice using random metal elements.

July 11, 2025 7 p.m. — July 11, 2025 8 p.m.

Favorite cutting board or serving board in need of a little TLC, then this is the place for you. Bring your board by the shop and we will refinish it with some sanding and oiling till it’s (almost) as good as new. Once you register for a slot, Peter will reach out to you to schedule your 20-minute session and find out what work your board needs.

Mordant Printing with Natural Dyes

July 12, 2025 10 a.m. — July 13, 2025 2 p.m.

Mordants are substances, generally metallic salts, that are used in combination with natural dyes to create lasting colors on cloth. In this class, we will create thickened mordant pastes to paint and print designs on cotton yardage. We will cover fabric preparation, making a printing surface, simple stamp-making, natural dye chemistry and history, as well as post dyeing fabric care. Students will create a color reference chart on cloth to use in future dyeing endeavors, as well as their own uniquely patterned pieces.

Beginner-friendly and all experiences welcome! Learn the principles of taking beautiful photos, how to cull and edit your work, then choose 1-2 to print on archival fine-art papers. This sounds dramatic, but you don’t truly know your photographs until you’ve seen them on paper. This course will also set you up for a planned autumn workshop on frame-making and mounting (stay tuned for details)

Electronic Soldering Skills for Surface Mount and Through Hole PCBs

This class will teach participants the techniques for effective and reliable soldering on printed circuit boards (PCBs). Both surface mount and through-hole soldering techniques will be explained through videos and lecture and hands on experience will be completed using kits made for soldering skills.

These skills will be allow the student to assemble electronic kits or projects after completion of the course.

Show off your creations with compelling, professional-looking photos. This hands-on workshop is designed for artists and makers with any level of photography experience: anyone who wants to make high-quality images of your creations. Learn beginner-friendly studio lighting techniques, how to use a lightbox for clean, well-lit shots, and some simple tricks to make your work stand out. No specialized equipment needed for the class—just bring your camera (or smartphone) and a product to photograph!

July 17, 2025 noon — 6 p.m.

Helping hands needed to make warm, comforting quilts for Baby Steps in Claremont! Only basic skills needed. Do you know how to use a sewing machine, iron, or rotary cutter? This is not a quilting class, but we will guide you along through the whole process of making twin and crib size quilts for those in need in our area.

Please come when it is convenient for you, even if you can only spare an hour.

Closing Exhibit – Spring Artist in Residence

July 17, 2025 6 p.m. — July 17, 2025 8 p.m.

Please join us as we celebrate the end of Berkley Heath’s term as the Spring Artist in Residence (AiR) at CMS. This Closing Exhibit will feature Berkley’s new work produced during her residency, and will include a gallery sale of her work.  Her residency included leading a community indigo dyeing day, teaching the natural dyeing process and learning to use the laser cutter and Cricut to create new stencils for her work.

This social event also includes an open house to tour the Claremont Makerspace. Whether you’re a long-time member or a new visitor, we hope you’ll join us for an evening of art, conversation, refreshments, and celebration. All shops will be open for tours and members/staff will be on hand to answer your questions. 

  • Wood shop: with all the necessary large and small tools for woodworking, plus a CNC Router
  • Jewelry studio: covers tools needed for shaping, texturing, enameling and soldering
  • Metal shop: everything needed for working with metal, cutting, shaping, MIG, TIG and Stick welding, plasma cutting
  • Fiber arts studio: sewing machines, mid-arm quilter, looms, textile dyeing area and an embroidery machine
  • Electronics lab: provides tools for small electronics, 3D printers, a laser cutter, and a trinocular microscope
  • Photography and Craft studio: large format printer, hot press, product lighting, photography printers, Cricut cutter and a craft cabinet for free member use
  • Machine shop: metrology tools, two manual mills, metal lathe, grinder and a CNC mill

Everyone is welcome and this event is FREE, with light refreshments available. There is plenty of parking next door in the municipal parking garage. Registration is requested but not required.

Open to all ages, children under 16 years old must be accompanied by their adult.

Scarf in a Day: Rigid Heddle Weaving for Beginners

Join me for a full one-day exploration of weaving taking a “naked” loom and dressing it in beautiful colors. Then spend the day falling into the rhythm weaving your personal summer scarf.  This day long class will run from 9:30 – 5:30 with a lunch break mid class. Class includes your own loom for the day plus individualized instruction to ensure success.  A selection of weaving materials will be available for purchase at the start of the class.  Bring lunch, beverage and snacks.

$100 for members/$120 non-members PLUS $20 in cash for the instructor to cover materials fees

CMS Amateur Radio Club (W1CMS) Monthly Meetup

July 20, 2025 1 p.m. — 3 p.m.

The Claremont MakerSpace has an Amateur Radio club! Before makers, hackers, and DIY, there was Amateur Radio.

Join us on July 20th at 1 p.m. for our monthly meeting. You do not have to be a licensed ham to participate, just bring your curiosity and energy! Everyone is welcome! Each month, we feature a presenter (45 minutes to an hour), and after we adjourn to MakerSpace’s Digital Fabrication and Electronics Lab for open-time kit building, sharing, studying, and socializing.

Intro to Plasma Cutting

Plasma cutting is a powerful and versatile means of cutting steel, aluminum, and other conductive materials, for applications ranging from heavy industry to abstract art. In Intro to Plasma Cutting, students will the learn the fundamental processes and techniques for handheld plasma cutting using the Claremont MakerSpace’s Hypertherm Powermax85 – and will get plenty of hands-on practice with the tool. The goal of this class is to prepare students to be certified to use the CMS’s plasma cutter, handheld, independently. 

If you have a piece of metal that you would like cut, please feel to bring it with you just check with John Lambert (ccdjohnbike@gmail.com OR info@claremontmakerspace.org) to make sure the size will work.

Introduction to the Wood Shop Tools

July 24, 2025 6 p.m. — July 25, 2025 9 p.m.

Would you like to learn how to use basic shop machinery to make a lovely hardwood serving/cutting board?  Then this is the course for you.  Starting with raw lumber you will learn how to make a useful and beautiful piece that can serve you or a special friend for years to come. In this course you will learn how to use the band saw, jointer, planer, table saw, chop saw, and router table safely and (for members) become certified to use these tools AND leave with a cutting board!

All tools, materials, and safety gear will be provided – though, students are welcome to bring their own tools and gear.

Unlock your inner designer in this playful two-day workshop that blends the charm of Ed Emberley’s drawing method with the power of digital design in Cuttle.xyz. Inspired by Emberley’s belief that anyone can draw using simple shapes, you’ll learn how to create your own laser-cuttable artwork. No drawing or design experience needed.

Please Note:Participants should be comfortable using a computer, including basic tasks like using a mouse or trackpad, navigating a website, and typing in a web browser.

Metrology and Machining

July 26, 2025 3 p.m. — 5 p.m.

In this course we will be discussing precision measurement. This class will cover the topic of metrology from the perspective of Modern Industrial Manufacturing. The goal of this class is for students leave with a greater understanding of why things are designed in a specific way and the measurements, methods and systems used to ensure those tolerances are achieved. There will be demonstrations of manufacturing, applications of measurement on various parts, and overall attention-to-detail skill development. Photography Club

July 28, 2025 5:30 p.m. — 7 p.m.

We are a new group of amateur and professional photographers meeting regularly to learn from each other, practice our craft, and develop the community of photographic artists, commercial photographers, and visual storytellers around Claremont and the Upper Valley. Meetings are free for CMS members, and open to the public with a fee to support operations at the MakerSpace. Each meeting is led by one of our members and focuses on a topic of interest chosen by the group: from technical workshops on shooting techniques, to photo critique sessions, gear show & tells, photo walks, and whatever else we come up with together.
